7 Interesting Facts About Benedict Cumberbatch

1. The African kidnapping
While on location in South Africa for “To the Ends of the Earth” (2005), Cumberbatch experienced a horrific carjacking in which he was kidnapped, but talked his way into getting released. He subsequently wrote about the shocking moment in an article for The Prince’s Trust, a charity organization founded in 1976 by Prince Charles.

2. Hollywood
Benedict has had a long list of movies where he played vital roles, defining the plot. H is one of those men who never really care about being the lead as long as they get to experiment and showcase their acting skills. In 2013, he starred in films Star Trek Into Darkness, 12 Years a Slave, The Fifth Estate, and August: Osage County.

3. Academics
He received his Master’s degree in “Classical Acting for the Professional Theatre” from the oldest drama school in the United Kingdom, the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). Before studying drama at Manchester University, the actor took a gap year at a Tibetan monastery, where he taught English to the resident monks. Cumberbatch was astonished at the monks ability to focus and revered their sense of purpose when working.

4. The mimic
He is one of those brilliant actors who can mimic even better. His impersonation of Alan Rickman is so unbelievably good that he was asked to voice Rickman’s “Harry Potter” character, Snape, in a special Valentine’s Day episode of “The Simpsons” in 2013.

5. The stage
Cumberbatch’s first West End theatre performance was for Sir Richard Eyre’s revival of Hedda Gabler as George Tesman in 2005. Since then, he has headlined Royal National Theatre productions After the Dance (2010) and Danny Boyle’s Frankenstein (2011). He has recently been roped in to play Hamlet in London!

6. He’s Been Cyber-Stalked
It’s like a real-life “A” situation. Celebs get a lot of tweets, but he said someone was live-tweeting his actions inside his house!

7. His fangirling
Cumberbatch gets star struck on meeting other celebrities. He says, “Every time I’ve met someone famous who I’ve been in the audience of. I have the same butterflies and inability to be cool. I approach them as a fellow member of the human race as the next person in their audience does. I’ve been doing this for 10 odd years, and so to meet people who thrilled me with their work for my entire life in such a concentrated manner as has happened over the last few years have been mind-blowing.”
